ABOUT

For years, the Kettering Summer Food Service Program has served meals at two locations in Kettering. Nearly 50% of Kettering children rely on free or reduced lunch prices every day and when school is not in session, these children may not receive a meal. Partners for Healthy Youth, a joint City of Kettering and Kettering City School organization, collaborates with local churches, non-profits and other organizations to stand in the gap. Meals are provided five days a week at two different sites in Kettering (one at the Trails of Oak Creek, the other at Van Buren Park) reaching financially disadvantaged families.

Nearly half of the students in the Kettering City Schools – 49.93%, to be exact -- receive free or reduce-priced meals every day at school. For these students, in particular, food insecurity is a very real challenge. During the summer months – when the “safety net” of school meals is not available – there may be days when these students actually go without meals when the school-based resources are not available. A lack of transportation to more remote sites where free meals are distributed is also a challenge for students living in these areas, so bringing the meals to them in their neighborhoods and providing positive adult engagement in the process is a win-win prospect for everyone!
